Rackmount case troubles

Post by amossam »

Hello

I'm using Protocase Designer 4.3.2 (4.4 won't work on my system, osX 10.9), and I have problems designing case and understanding template...

I'm using 19" rackmount template, 6U height, 550mm depth, and I need front face divided in 8 segments (pic.

).
What is use of this hole in the middle of front face?
Also, rear face is smaller than front face? (pic.

). I need same cutout on front and back face, with cuts 47mm apart that protrude 5mm, and total height of at least 235mm (without that 5mm cuts).

thx for any help

Hello,
There is a stud from the front face that goes through a flange on the base (you can see it if you remove the cover with the Show/ Hide Parts menu item). If it really causes you trouble we can put two studs on the outer parts of that flange instead.

The rear is smaller than the front - there is room for rails to be mounted around the enclosure. In the new version of designer you have the option of making a full height rackmount if you do not wish to use rails. I will test the Mac version of the new designer within the week.

Well, I need rails, but doesn't the rails go only on sides?

OK, thanks. I can run 4.4 version from 13th of January, but what ever I do on faces it won't apply that on model. When I click on "Accept and close" it won't do anything.

Thanks again.

I am sorry, the rails is why it is slightly narrower than a standard rack opening. The 1/8" on the top and bottom is just so that the screws used do not cause interference. If you wish flathead screws countersunk into the enclosure, the full height can be reached (as is done on the new version if you select Full Height). This is slightly more expensive but not much.

I think the January 20th version listed on this forum should work for you (but there could still be a bug left):

Hello, me again! :-D

In the end, I'm using Protocase Designer 4.4 on win7, so I succeded in full height for back, and for front face and it's screw in the middle, we'll se about that later...

Now, i have new question. In that 6U case goes 8 vertical U-shaped plates that hold nodes.

Front plate is almost full 6U height (minus thickness of case plating) with two mounting holes, big cutout and two fans cutout. I need that big cutout to go from bottom plate (red zone in following picture), or max 2mm above it. Can that be done?

Also, rear plate should be lower for 12mm (6mm from bottom and 6mm from top) compared to front plate. When I put cutout to the edge, it still shows thin line?
back plate 1.png

Can this be done in this way?
Hints or tips?

Thanks

So you are asking if cutouts can go from the very bottom to the very top? On the front I think this would take a special design from our tech team because of the mounting. In the rear, it depends on how wide the cutout is. The exclusion zones in the rear (Red Area) are the distance from a bend that cutouts must be to prevent distortion. However, if the cutout goes all the way through the bend it is not an issue. However, if the cutout was too wide, there would not be mounting strength left for mounting the case together. I think it would be best if you either called or emailed our sales department and they can get you in touch with someone from our tech team who can help you out.
