4.3 installation issues on Windows 7

Post by crinker »

I love the product and have had your team build me multiple prototypes in the past. As such, I was a little bummed when I did a 4.3 upgrade (from 4.2.7) to find that the software just locks at the "New file | Open an Existing . . . | Close This Dialog" box. I have tried uninstalling the designer, then Java, confirming all video drivers are current, manually installing Java 64-bit and verifying it works (though Java.com).

I've checked with Windows Event Log and not logged events showing anything out of the ordinary. I've even tried downloading the old Version 3 (which works fine, but my designs are all 4.x).

Please advise - - - I have a project that I was supposed to have submitted to you team Tuesday (we need it early next week) and have struggled for multiple hours.

any advice is appreciated. Do you have a 4.2.7 download I can install and try?

Feel free to call me at 919-986-0385. My rep has been Kim Fudge lately.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may provide.

Hello,
My apologies for the inconvenience, and for the late reply. I assume you contacted Kim and got sorted out. We had a problem with the forum notifications, it stopped notifying me when a new post was made. This of course was silent so I did not realize there was a problem.

If you have any problems with the current version

http://www.protocasedesigner.com/RELEAS ... -Nov25.exe

please let me know. It has a bundle JRE with it so what you have on your computer does not matter. You still need up to date video card drivers but if that is a problem it freezes on the splash screen.

Douglas,

Thanks for the past reply. I am still having issues. Now I get to the "New in Version 4.4.5" window, but am unable to close it at all. I see the menu up top but nothing else. I've updated display drivers to no avail. Is there a log file or something I can review to try and narrow this down? I have looked in the Windows event log and nothing is being logged there (little odd).

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

please try

http://www.protocasedesigner.com/RELEAS ... -May01.exe

I did change how the focusing works, and fixed a bug I was seeing. The nature of these bugs though makes them hard to find.

If that version (or one more recent if you are reading this in the future) does not fix your problems, please send a copy of your Documents\ProtocaseDesigner\debug.0.log to designer@protocase.com and mention the problem you are having.

Thanks Douglas,

After a few hours of beating my head against a wall, I think I finally figured out what the long haunting issue has been. You may wish to pass this on to fellow developers and/or clients.

At least for me: When running the AMD video chipset (I have the Radeon 7700 cards), I was also running a USB powered external monitor that was driving off of DisplayLinkUI driver. After updating all the AMD stuff and trying to reconfigure Java, etc., it turns out that removing the DisplayLinkUI driver fixed it instantly. I, of course, have lost the use of my mini-DisplayLink monitor, but at least can continue my Protocase CAD work without loosing my sanity.

Thanks!!

Interesting, I will see if I can recreate the issue using a usb external monitor, I think we have a couple in the shop. I will let you know what we find out.

Thanks for the sleuthing!
